Murder One - September
Title: To Kill Another Day: The Care and Feeding of Your Weapon
Instructor: Mark Worthen
Class Description: Reading other books and watching movies is not exactly the best way to learn to take care of a gun. In Underworld, something like 154 shots (no exaggeration were fired in the first scene without a reload, jam or misfire. Very few movies or books show anyone cleaning or caring for a gun, which must be done daily if one uses one on a regular basis, let alone fires one with the frequency of some of our heroes and heroines. A gun or rifle is a machine which must be taken care of if one expects it to save the hero's life.
The same is true for swords, knives, maces and nearly every other weapon you can dream of. Have you ever read a scene where a character sharpens a blade? Not unless he's an axe murderer.
But to achieve any kind of realism in your books, you must show that your hero or heroine cares as much for his or her weapons and tools at least a little bit. Otherwise, your story runs the risk of devolving into cartoon territory where the coyote runs ten feet off the cliff before falling.
My class will show you not only how a character fires a weapon, but also the parts and procedures for cleaning it, be it a gun or a blade. And if we have time, we'll also speculate a little bit on blasters and particle cannons.
I am willing to look at some scenes from the participants, so you may be given the opportunity to bring some portions from your current work.
